Introducing “Hawthorn” 1950s Blouse Pattern

New Pattern! My May 2024 pattern release!

I have this little cutie all finished up just in time for Spring and Summer sewing! Based on an original early 1950s pattern, this pattern is made with lapped seams, with two decorative buttons at the front. It slips on over the head, with no side fastenings, and has release darts at both front and back. Of course, if you need, you can add your own side fasteners. I originally was termed “Quick and Easy”, but I estimate this to be approximately Intermediate level for modern sewing enthusiasts because of the vintage methods used for lapped seams and bias facings.

Based on a 34″ bust original in Misses Sizes, this has been graded to include sizes 30″-48″ bust all in the same packet. Some pointers for adjustments and other written tips have been included.

Photo showing my size 38″ bust sample next to the mock up for size 48″. The pattern is based off of the same vintage source material in size 34″ bust. It’s likely the larger sizes may need to raise the armhole side seams, and may with to taper the shoulder width. A visual of the flat pattern with a drawn line for suggestions of how to do both of these things is included in the pattern packet.

This is a great pattern for if you have just a couple yards of a fun fabric to use! Modern fabric estimations are visible on the back cover, which can be enlarged online to see. It uses under 3 yards of fabric- smaller sizes can get it out of about 2 yards. Great for those novelty prints you’ve been hoarding!

You can find it now in my Etsy shop and website. Both E-Patterns and Printed Patterns are available.

Named Hawthorn for my Grandma Norma, a farm girl who grew up in Missouri, and moved out to California in the 1940s with her sister. She had darling casual outfits in our old family photos. She worked her way up from telephone switchboard (she actually worked opening day at Disneyland) to engineer for Pacific Bell. Truly inspiring.

Photos show me wearing it at Disneyland with the Merry Go Round Circle Skirt (pattern available in my shop), and another photo of my wearable mock up and the 48″ bust mock up next to each other).
