>Bette Davis Uses Bisquick!

>Recently on eBay I found a cookbook from 1935 called “Let the Stars Show You How to Take a Trick a Day with Bisquick.” I just got it and wanted to share one of the pages. I typed up the recipes featured from the back of the book, just in case you desire to try them. Bisquick was introduced in 1931, and you can read a bit more about it here.

Bisquick Scones:
Combine 1/2 cup of sugar and 2 cups Bisquick. Add 2 well beaten eggs. Beat thoroughly. Roll dough 1/4″ thick. Cut in squares, brush with melted butter, and fold in triangles. Bake for 10 minutes in hot oven, 425 degrees F.

Jelly Tea Cakes:
Follow Bisquick recipe on package. Cut half Bisquick dough with round cutter, other half with doughnut cutter the same size. Brush rounds with beaten egg and milk. Place circles on top. Sprinkle with confectioners sugar. Bake. Fill centers with jelly or jam.

London Buns:
1 egg
2 1/2 cups bisquick
2/3 cup milk
4 tbsp. sugar
1 cup currants
1/2 cup candied fruit peel (citron, lemon, orange, etc)
4 tbsp softened butter

Beat egg, add milk, stir in Bisquick and sugar. Beat until smooth. Add currants, candied fruit peels, and softened butter to the Bisquick. Bake in 18 tiny greased cups 12 minutes in hot oven, 425 degrees F.

Bisquick Pinwheels
Follow Bisquick recipe on the package. Roll Bisquick dough 1/2 inch thick. Spread with marmalade. Roll up as for jelly roll; cut into 1/2 inch slices. Place cut side down in well greassed muffin pans. Bake.

Hunt Club Sandwiches

Roll Bisquick dough very thin. Dot surface with 4 tbsp butter. Fold as to make 3 layers. Turn half way round. Roll out 1/2 the dough 1/8 inch thick to cover botton of oblong pan, about 12 by 9 inches. Spread thickly with chicken and ham filling. Cover with the remaining dough rolled thin. But through in desired shapes, such as squares, diamonds, etc. but leave in place. Bake 15 minutes in hot oven, 450 degrees F. Filling: To 1 1/2 cups cooked chicken, cut up and flaked, add 3/4 cup cooked ham, cut in 1/2 inch pieces, add 4 tbsp. top milk, 3 beaten egg yolks, and 2 hard cooked eggs, chopped. Season with salt and pepper.

Lemon or Orange Tea Bread
Beat 1 egg well. Add 1/2 cup sugar. Add 2 cups Bisquick. Mix thoroughly. Stir in 1/4 cup candied lemon or orange peel and 3 tbsp syrup from fruit peel. Mix well. Pour into greased bread loaf pan, 5×9 inches. Bake 50 minutes in moderate oven, 350 degrees F. Immediately brush top with lemon or orange syrup and sprinkle with shreds of tiny peel.

Ginger Waffles
Follow Waffle recipe on Bisqick package. Substitute 1/2 cup molasses for 1/2 cup of the milk in the Bisquick Waffle recipe (thus using 1/2 cup molasses and 1/4 cup milk). Add 1 tsp. ginger, 1 tsp. cinnamon and 1/2 tsp. cloves.
