Kitchen Cabinets (Now Hoosier Cabinets), 1928

This article about kitchen cabinets comes out of a Modern Priscilla magazine from 1928. It’s interesting to note, strictly from a historical perspective, that the article mentions pantries as somewhat old-fashioned. The 1920s seems to streamline that idea down into the kitchen cabinet!

We call these “Hoosier Cabinets” now, but Hoosier was actually a maker of the cabinets. It’s kind of how we say “Kleenex” for tissues, or “Hoover” for vacuum.

Love the fun paint on these ones! Put pretty please don’t paint the pretty oak cabinets you find. If they were originally painted, totally re-do it. But I’ve seen many a kitchen cabinet ruined by a new paint-job when they old one would have had lovely wood!

Do you have a kitchen cabinet? Let me know! I have a lovely one from the early 1920s that I inherited from my mom.

I agree. It breaks my heart to see some of these beautiful historic pieces covered with paint. Thanks for this Blast from the Past.

Paint – two hours to apply, 40 hours to sand off again!

My parents just bought one last year to use for a coffee and tea station in their kitchen! I’ve always loved these style of cabinets.
