So, I’m not good at channeling my inner Gloria Swanson, and I need your help.
I want to post my first video blog this week, but I have NO idea what to talk about. I’m also a bit self conscious of videos of myself (but, really, who isn’t?)
So… Give me some questions I should answer. Do you have something you want to know about me? Please leave me some basic questions below, so I can get over being camera shy!

When did you first start wearing vintage and what got you into it? How can other people find vintage clothing or make it? What is the most important thing to remember when sewing?

I see loads of ‘how to’ tutes out there, so I vote for taking a gown you’ve made and talking about it: historical context of women’s clothing, your personal history with it/why you wanted to make that particular pattern, and highlight a technique that was used for it (couture or something we may not try today). Many of your Victorian and before dresses are quite spectacular; I’d likely never sew something like that, but they’re really interesting and I’d like to know more about them.

January 5, 2014 at 4:25 am (10 years ago)Pick something that you absolutely love to talk about in your first video. And this may sound counter intuitive, but don’t use a script or over think your topic too much before hand. One thing I noticed during your Costume College class a few years ago is that whenever you deviated from your notes to mention something about a pattern that you just had to share because it was so awesome but you didn’t have it written down, you were instantly fun, personable and engaging to watch. That’s the side of you I know and that’s what you want to bring out on camera.
So talk about a favorite pattern, sewing project, the kitties, whatever gets you so excited that you just have to share it with the world. Leave more of the “educational” stuff till after you feel more comfortable with filming. All of us who follow your blog already adore you so just remember that when you are filming.

Seam finishes, the interfacing behind a buttonhole, any hand stitching required for structure. Thanks in advance. Of course, knowing the history of your passion would also be so interesting. How did you get to where you are now, was this always a passion. If this is already posted in the blog I missed it I am afraid.

January 5, 2014 at 3:36 pm (10 years ago)I second the call for a video tour of your sewing space, or another area you happen to create in. It’ll give you a chance to work with the camera/webcam without having to always focus on your face, or you, if that makes you uneasy at first. Or closeup comparisons of interior garment finishes – perhaps a direct vintage/modern reconstruction comparison of the same kind of detailed garment, so we can see the changes made and why.
If you want to be more personal, how about a sit-down where you tell us how you drifted into the costume/vintage/lifestyle of it all, so to speak. And have you ever had to deal with anyone who was just unpleasant and insistently disapproving of it? Fashion police of a sort? Ever run across any “difficult” situations in your work? Not to gossip, but it’s just such a very different line of work, and I know virtually nothing about the costume-provisioning and vintage-wearing markets. Introduce us to it all?

Maybe some accessories that you feel really help that outfit pop (hat, shoes, jewelry, purse…)? Thank you so much for all your posts!
