… and we’re back!

Sorry about that, folks! If you tried to access the blog earlier I went over in traffic, so it was suspended. I’ve upgraded my plan now, so we should be good to go from here on out. Thanks for your patience!

Hey Lauren! I’m hoping for a bit of your expertisical advice (that’s my new word!)…I am making a wedding gown out of this pattern in grey crepe de chine and would love your opinion on what i should do to finish the neckline.

Thin self-bias binding? bias stay? Tiny hand rolled hem? Machine stitched baby hem? And how in the heck do i maintain a “V” point in the back?? :) I have oodles of old sewing manuals to hand and some online tutorials bookmarked, but I am at a loss as to what would look best and be the most authentic. This is my first foray on silken fabrics….if you could point me in the right direction i would be most grateful and will figure the rest out. :) Thanks a million…
    Miss Amelina

That pattern is lovely! I think I might have it in my stash, too…

Let’s see… I think you’d be good to go with self-bias facing and do a hem by hand as invisibly as you can. Do the bias facing at the V by doing a mitered corner. There’s a link to the right with tutorials I did with when I came out with my apron pattern that will help you out :)

Because of the drape of the bodice, definitely do it as a self fabric- you don’t want anything stiffer than your self fabric or else it will make the neckline hang funny. Silky fabrics are a bit picky, so drape is essential.

And most importantly, I want to see pictures when you’re done and CONGRATULATIONS!!! :)

Thank you, thank you for your suggestions! (and the dress is for a friend, but congratulations are still in order as it is one of my FIRST commissioned dresses…ooh la la!) Just getting ready to piece the skirt–using paper and plenty of stay stitching…as soon as the wedding is over i will post photos on my blog. Thanks again! Sew on!
