One of the reasons I love 1936 is because it’s the year the Queen Mary first sailed and I love thinking of all the chic outfits women wore on board, and all the excitement that went into shopping for their wardrobes for their trip. This is from The Womans Home Companion, November 1936. I love the plaids and suits. So pretty for autumn!

You'd certainly get a lot of looks if you wore a cape these days, but aside from that it is also not a very practical outfit for modern life. I made a 30ies Cape last year and wore it for a vacation in England. It's beautiful, gorgeous and impressive, but really impractical: you never get really warm (England is VERY cold in the winter) and it's annoying to try to get into the car with the cape. I ended up throwing the whole thing back (adding some drama to the nuisance) and sort of wrestling it over one arm to avoid strangling myself with it when attaching the safety belt.

It was perfect for SF weather.And then I moved to Wellington, and had to stop wearing capes because they just act like big sails in the wind here!
