>Autumn Coats, 1930s Style

>After two full days of gloom, I don’t mind letting my mind wander to autumn coats!  I’ve got several lovely wools in my stash I’ve been hanging onto in my stash and since it’s been over a year since I flexed my tailoring skills I’m getting anxious to delve into a larger project.

My creativity and inspiration far outweigh my sewing will, so if I get one of these finished I will be a happy camper in my warm coat! So funny that I live in Southern California where these things are seldom an actual necessity unless you go out early in the morning or late at night, but I’m terribly drawn to cold weather clothing.  Perhaps because it’s not a necessity?  But I can’t wait for rain, watching the steam rise off a fresh cup of coffee, and feeling all cozy in hats, scarves, and coats.

My recent pattern purchase was from the Vintage Pattern Lending Library.  I’ve had my eye on this pattern for a little while, and after news she was having issues with an Ebay member reporting her listings vindictively  (when everything was on the up and up) I decided it was time to buy it and help a fellow pattern seller out.  She always has lovely patterns of good quality.  This one came in the mail yesterday so I’m anxious to start on it.  I’ve got some lovely black wool and an old distressed Persian Lamb coat I’ve been hanging onto to use as accents for a coat, so I think this pattern and my fabric will be a perfect match.  I even just bought some large buttons on Etsy from the seller Pink Sewing Room, so I’m thinking this will need to happen for this autumn and winter.

My other coat project is this wonderful blanket coat from a vintage 30s pattern.  I am going to see if I can squeak out the longer version from this fabric, but it was a bit pricey so the shorter version may be my only option since I couldn’t afford more fabric.  The fabric was just sitting and waiting for me to discover it at our local hole in the wall fabric store and is lovely Pendleton blanket wool that was available by the yard.  It was a little over half the going rate for this fabric, but even though it was a good discount it still was a little higher than I usually pay for fabric.  But how could I possibly resist the weave that is perfectly vintage and the colors?  If you’re interested, there’s a variety of colors and patterns up on the Pendleton website, and occasionally I see them pop up on Ebay.

My other coat I had great plans to make up, but probably will now be pushed on the back burner was this one with matching skirt.  I actually have the perfect fabric for it with enough to make the whole ensemble, but I guess I’ll have to see how my patience for tailoring holds out from the above two coats ;)
What about you?  Do you have any plans of purchasing or making an autumn coat?  I know several lovely bloggers are doing the Lady Gray Sew-A-Long with Gertie, and I admit that’s what’s inspiring me to move beyond just daydreaming about these coats!
