Thanks for the great episode, Lauren! I’d like to add that, if you end up with roommates who are more extroverted than you and you need a place to take a break that isn’t your room, the Hospitality Suite usually has a room that is dedicated to showing movies, where you can sit in the dark and (for the most part) no one will bother you.

The sewing at the last minute thing is just crazy. I just won’t do that. I prepare all year and choose what I will wear and if the theme works with what I am wearing, fine. I was new a year ago and roomed with someone who promised I would have a bed of my own and I ended up sleeping with a complete stranger in a full size bed. Not good at all. No sleep and the person who organized it was fun and gregarious, but there was nowhere to have quiet all weekend. This year, I made my reservations early, and then I have a roommate who sees the experience the way I do and even though I don’t know her because this is her first year and she is from the Eastern US. Also,, it is her first year, and I will have the opportunity to make her feel welcome and included whenever she wants to join. This year, I have also made plans with friends I just found out were coming and now I don’t feel alone. I never want anyone to feel the way I felt my first year, and yet I am coming back to correct the mistakes from last year.

This episode really makes me feel better, and that I’m not alone!! I’m just a beginner and haven’t even gone to an event yet, and since I’m a socially awkward person in general, I’ve been worried about awkwardness at my first events. Now I feel prepared! I also think it’ll be easier to socialize and make friends with fellow historical costumers… Thanks so much for the tips!
