>Yesterday my husband and I spent the day on the Queen Mary at their annual Art Deco Festival. It was such fun! We went to the tea dance, and had lots of fun dancing around in the main ballroom and chatting with friends.
I had grand plans to make one of Ginger Rogers gowns from Top Hat, but alas, time won and I put aside my partially completed gown to make for another event in the future, and turned to my fabric and pattern stash and found a lovely little vintage cotton organdy print fabric I’ve heed hoarding, and a new green silk for contrast trim.
I got a chance to play with my new Perfect Pleater (I have a feeling I will be making a LOT more pleated trim in the future. I love this little toy!), and the result was cute little 1/4″ tucks that I added to the neckline and the peplum, and a made up a little belt to match, inspired by the one on the cover of the pattern envelope and an original 1910s one I have. The belt has short lengths of boning at the center and closes with hooks and eyes, then I sewed the bow on top so it keeps the uniform width all the way around instead of narrowing at the front where the bow is tied. I really love this vintage pattern and this is the second time I’ve made it (previously I made the longer version with the squared neckline), but there’s two qualms I have with it. I usually have to shorten the torso on my patterns 1″, and I did that on this which made it too short in the torso (thus the thicker belt to hide the waist seam ;) ). I also was expecting the skirt to hit more mid-calf, but it hits where it does on me with no alterations to length. I’m assuming this was originally drafted on the petite side.
It was a really lovely and relaxed day, and such fun to get dressed up and go out! Plus it’s a great cause to restore a historic ship, and lots of fun to see different folks interpretations of period styles. I just wish I remembered to take more photos! I just have these and a couple others up on my flickr page.
